Tingrith Church Wall
Written by: Nigel Washington
The project involved restoring the eastern wall of the churchyard at Tingrith. Re-pointing and rebuilding was required to reestablish the consistency of the wall to bring it to a standard in keeping with the church and surrounding properties in this beautiful area.
Achievements
It took time but the end result is good and presents a beautiful boundary wall to the church and a reference point to the many who walk the adjacent footpath. The area now looks cared for rather than forgotten and the wall gives definition to the eastern side.
Benefits to People
We explained the project in magazine article and some will have taken note. A display adjacent to the wall would underline the importance of this heritage provision.
Some in the community questioned what was going on. This allowed us to explain just how necessary and ongoing it is to work at the restoration of the church and surrounding area.
I am pleased that the community recognize that the church needs care and it is being cared for on my watch.
Benefits to Heritage & Landscape
It is definitely in better condition and better defined. Whether it is better understood I am not sure. A notice to explain what has happened displayed by the wall for 3 months would be a good educational medium.
The neatness of the wall complements the area.
Challenges & Lessons Learnt
The timing of the restoration meant that the pointing failed in places and revisits were necessary and the time the project took elongated.
If the project were run again, I would suggest we begin and finish the project in the summer months.
