How do I find a route?
- Start by using our interactive map - this shows all of our walking, cycling & horse riding routes and if you click on the icons you can read short summaries of each route - highlights, distance, points of interest etc. You can find and filter a number of routes this way and then click through to read about the ones that interest you.
On each of the walking, cycling and horse riding pages, you will find a 'routes in your area' section for ideas of popular routes and PDFs for you to download.

How long is the Greensand Ridge Walk?
- The Greensand Ridge Walk is a long-distance walk of 42 miles that crosses Bedfordshire, with brief sections in Cambridgeshire and Buckinghamshire. From its southern endpoint at Leighton Buzzard the route runs north-west to Gamlingay, following the Greensand Ridge, a distinctive feature that rises from surrounding clay vales to give a landscape of gently rolling hills and small valleys, often heavily wooded and rich in wildlife.

How long is the Greensand Cycleway?
- Sustrans has been working with the Greensand Country Landscape Partnership to extend the existing Greensand Cycleway, which previously ended in Sandy, up to Gamlingay in the east, so that it finishes (or starts, if you are riding from east to west) in the same place as the Greensand Ridge Walk.
The route will also be extended to the west, to start (or finish) in the centre of Leighton Buzzard. Artists are also being commissioned to build a new gateway feature to mark the start and end of the long distance route.

What should I wear whilst out on a ride in the countryside?
- Your own clothes and boots should be comfortable and suitable for the weather conditions.
You should always wear hi-viz, ideally on both you and on the horse, which could be seen from above as well as from all angles by other people on the bridleways. Wear boots which are suitable for walking, should it be necessary and carrying a whip is advised for various uses (assuming your horse is safe with you doing so)

What should my horse wear whilst out on a ride in the countryside?
- If you are riding in unknown territory, it is advisable to have a headcollar under the bridle with a rope (looped and knotted - quick release - round the horse's neck, or attached to your saddle).
You should always wear hi-viz, ideally on both you and on the horse and even off-road.

Why is the rock called Greensand?
- There are strict rules for the naming of rocks which are usually named after the best place to see them. The term Greensand, formulated by the Victorians, was originally applied to green coloured sandstones of mid Cretaceous age found in the west of England. The green colour comes from the blue-green iron-rich clay mineral glauconite which was prevalent in that area.
However, sandstones of the early Cretaceous age found in Bedfordshire rarely show enough glauconite to make them green.
